Company is also committed to maintaining jobs for two months and boosts support and safety program for employees and partners
BRF, one of the largest food companies in the world, announces the donation of BRL 50 million worth of food, medical supplies and support to research and social development funds, to contribute to the efforts made to fight the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The donations are earmarked for hospitals, Santa Casa clinics, social assistance organizations and health professionals in the states and cities where the company has operations.
In Brazil, the initiative initially covers about 60 hospitals in 50 cities, in 9 states. In hospitals alone, including field hospitals, donations are expected to benefit more than 15,000 people/day, with nearly 2.5 million meals served for the next three months. As a global company, BRF will extend this initiative to countries where it owns production plants, such as Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.
Moreover, the company is to donate medical supplies, such as tests and thermometers, personal protective equipment, such as plastic cloaks, disposable caps and gowns, alcohol-based hand sanitizers, ventilators and other items that may be necessary. The materials will be primarily donated to health institutions based in the states and cities where BRF has production plants, distribution centers and corporate offices.
Additionally, during this period of uncertainty, BRF undertakes to maintain all jobs throughout the months of April and May and promote only the career-related procedures that are normal in the regular course of its operations. Also worthy of note is that BRF is hiring more than 2,000 people, including personnel to join its payroll and third-party contractors, to maintain production and supply and replace employees at higher risk, who were preventively instructed to stay home.
In order to support and provide further convenience to employees that are still working in the field, plants, Distribution Centers, out on the streets and at client premises, starting this week, BRF will provide weekly credit in BRF goods or meal cards to help them and their families to have easier access to food.
According to BRF CEO Lorival Luz, this is the time for all companies to demonstrate solidarity. “We are experiencing an unprecedented situation that has a dramatic impact on all of us. It is time for us to be united and mutually supportive. We will do all that is possible to protect our people, their families, and to help the population to overcome the consequences of the COVID-19 outbreak as quickly as possible. The donations we will make and the commitment to maintain our workforce in April and May are a way to support and provide some comfort at times of uncertainty,” the executive says.
BRF continues to operate its entire chain, by taking daily actions to ensure safety, health and sustainability to all people involved in its operational context, such as the creation of a new channel for answering questions, provision of PPE, temperature meters and tests for COVID-19, and others.
For suppliers, the company has shared its health and safety contingency plans, as well as communication and guidance initiatives related to preventive measures against COVID-19. Besides, it has worked in collaboration with suppliers to make sure they follow all safety measures to prevent COVID-19 infection.
In logistics, BRF has adopted new safety procedures and has advised drivers to use alcohol-based hand sanitizer, avoid hanging around the communal areas of the units to reduce the risk of infection, is offering ready meals and medical support to help truck companies to handle suspicious cases.
Regarding the integrated producers, the Company has boosted communication, extended its 24x7 channel of medical advice and support, in addition to establishing stricter hygiene procedures in and out of the workplace.
At BRF units, work began before the outbreak landed in Brazil with the setup, about two months ago, of a Permanent Multidisciplinary Monitoring Committee of executives and doctors, including Dr. Esper Kallás, infectologist and professor at Universidade de São Paulo — USP. The courses of action adopted include sending its workforce to work from home on March 12th, maintaining employees at higher risk at home — those older than 60, pregnant women and other personnel, as per medical guidance — provision of greater amounts of alcohol-based hand sanitizer and/or alternative as-effective products at all property entrances, restrooms and busy areas, as well as stricter cleaning procedures in communal areas: changing rooms, cafeterias, personnel vehicles, machinery, equipment, facilities, walls, floors, handles and handrails.
